e-waste Collection:

Bring working/non-working computers, peripherals, portable electronics and other household e-waste to be re-used or properly recycled. This collection is being assisted by members of Planet Earth Initiative a newly developed local non-profit group committed to supporting the study of sustainable development in areas of energy, waste, consumer products and food. From the collection, computers and peripherals in good working order will be collected by the Rotary Club of Whitby Sunrise and donated to the Heritage Skills Development Centre - helping Families Build a Strong Foundation focusing on refugees, new immigrant Women, at-risk youth and other marginalized individuals. All other non-working equipment will be responsibly recycled by MTC of Whitby. MTC is proud contributor to our community and year round runs an e-waste collection drop off as part of the Do What You Can electronic stewardship program. MTC is also sponsoring door prizes to be won by all residents bringing in their e-waste.

    3rd Annual Used Bicycle Collection:

For the 3rd year in a row, in co-operation with Africycle we will be collecting used bicycles to support programs to provide quality, affordable, sustainable transportation in Africa in Brooklin and 4 other locations across Oshawa, Whitby and Pickering. Africycle is a charitable organization started by a number of young people based out of Uxbridge. A portion of bicycles collected will be retained, refurbished in Canada and sold here in an effort to help pay shipping costs.  The balance of the bikes will be shipped by cargo container to Malawi, in southern Africa. In Malawi, bicycles are refurbished by Malawian employees (inside the cargo container which does double duty as the bicycle repair shop). The bikes are sold to pay the salaries of the employees with any profit used to support a school for children who are orphaned, disabled or designated as ‘vulnerable’ children.

We will be asking that for each bike donated that the donor make a minimum suggested $5 donation to help defray the costs of shipping the bicycles to Malawi. Each donation will receive a $10 coupon towards purchases at local bicycle retailer partners. Donations over $20 are eligible for a tax receipt.
